Planning a commercial washroom, accessible bathroom, aged care facility or mobility-friendly home renovation requires more than choosing standard bathroom fixtures. The right products need to suit the users, available space, plumbing layout and the specific requirements of the project.
Our Commercial & Care range includes accessible and commercial bathroom products such as care toilets, wall-hung basins, grab rails, shower seats, care tapware, urinals, backrests, Braille signage and practical washroom accessories.
Whether you are sourcing products for a workplace, public facility, healthcare or aged care project, accessible bathroom, school, hospitality venue or a home designed for easier everyday use, our team can help you compare product specifications before ordering.
Commercial and accessible bathrooms have different priorities from a standard residential bathroom. Start with who will use the space, how frequently it will be used and whether the project has specific accessibility or building requirements.
For high-use commercial facilities, durability, ease of cleaning, maintenance and replacement parts may be the main priorities. For accessible or care bathrooms, ease of movement, reach, support and correct fixture positioning become especially important.
If the project needs to meet accessibility requirements, do not select products based only on terms such as “care”, “accessible” or “disabled”. The complete bathroom layout, circulation space, installation position and fixture dimensions should be checked against the relevant project documentation, Australian Standards and building requirements.
For a care or accessible toilet area, first check the required pan height, pan projection, outlet type, set-out and surrounding circulation space.
Raised-height and ambulant-style toilets can make sitting down and standing up easier for some users, while specific accessible projects may have more detailed dimensional and installation requirements.
Plumbing is equally important. Before ordering, confirm whether the project requires an S-trap or P-trap toilet, the existing set-out and the water inlet position. These details can significantly affect which toilet models will fit the site.
For basins, consider the overall width and projection as well as the space underneath the basin. Wall-hung basins are often useful where clear floor space or wheelchair approach is important, but the correct height, waste position, tapware location and wall structure still need to be considered.
Grab rails should be chosen around the actual bathroom layout and required support points, rather than selecting a rail simply by length.
Our range includes straight, angled, corner and T-shaped grab rails, as well as selected shower support rails and toilet-area configurations. Depending on the layout, left-hand and right-hand versions may also need to be specified.
Before ordering, check:
Shower seats, backrests and other support accessories should be planned at the same stage. Correct positioning is particularly important because relocating these products after waterproofing and tiling can be difficult.
Commercial and care tapware should be selected according to both the user and the environment.
For care bathrooms, selected tapware with longer or easier-to-operate handles can make everyday use more practical for users with limited hand movement or strength. For workplaces, schools, hospitality venues and public washrooms, durability and ease of maintenance may be higher priorities.
Also check the existing or proposed plumbing configuration before purchasing. Basin mixers, wall-mounted tapware and shower mixers have different rough-in and installation requirements, so changing the product after plumbing work has started may add unnecessary cost.
For larger commercial washrooms, other fixtures such as urinals, dispensers, hand dryers, toilet roll holders and facility signage should also be considered early so the complete room can be planned consistently.
One of the most common purchasing problems in commercial bathroom projects is selecting a suitable-looking product before confirming the technical requirements.
Before placing an order, we recommend having your architectural drawings, bathroom layout, plumbing information or specification schedule available where possible.
Important details can include:
For accessible or regulated commercial projects, your builder, plumber, architect, building designer or building surveyor should confirm the final product suitability and installation requirements before installation.
The right specification depends heavily on the type of project.
Accessible and care bathrooms generally place greater importance on movement, support, fixture heights, clearances and ease of operation.
Aged care and assisted-living environments may also prioritise simple controls, practical cleaning, comfort and products that are easier for residents and carers to use.
Workplaces, retail spaces and public washrooms usually need durable, easy-to-maintain fixtures that can handle frequent daily use.
Schools, hospitality and other high-traffic facilities may place additional emphasis on cleaning, maintenance, replacement availability and robust product construction.
For a mobility-friendly home renovation, the priorities may be different again. The aim may be to improve everyday comfort and future usability without creating an institutional appearance. In these projects, finishes and coordinated bathroom products can be considered alongside accessibility and practicality.
Melbourne Bathroom Shop supplies bathroom, kitchen and washroom products to homeowners, builders, renovators, trade customers and commercial projects across Melbourne.
You can visit our Blackburn showroom to view selected products and discuss your project with our team. If you already have architectural drawings, a fixture schedule, measurements or a product list, bring them with you or send them through so we can help compare suitable options and product specifications.
Orders can also be arranged for pickup from our Nunawading warehouse, with delivery options available for Melbourne and surrounding areas depending on the products and delivery location.
For commercial and accessible projects, we recommend confirming the final specification with your builder, plumber, designer or building professional before ordering. Our role is to help you source and compare the required bathroom fixtures and products; final regulatory compliance depends on the complete design and installation of the project.
Start with who will use the bathroom and what the project requires, rather than choosing individual fixtures by appearance alone. Consider whether the space is a workplace, public washroom, aged-care facility, healthcare environment, accessible bathroom or comfort-focused home renovation. Then check the required toilet, basin, tapware, grab rails, shower support products and available clearances as one complete layout. Melbourne Bathroom Shop’s Commercial & Care range includes care toilets, basins, grab rails, shower seats, urinals and washroom accessories for different project types.
No. A product may be designed or tested for use in an accessible installation, but the complete bathroom layout and installation also need to meet the relevant project requirements. This can include fixture position, circulation space, grab-rail location, toilet clearances, basin access and other building details. Some MBS care basins and grab rails are specifically identified for AS 1428.1 applications, but product selection is only one part of compliance.
For commercial or regulated projects, confirm the current requirements with your building designer, access consultant, certifier or relevant trades before ordering.
Check the pan height, projection, trap type, set-out and water inlet position before choosing the toilet. Also consider how the toilet needs to work with grab rails, a backrest and the available room layout. MBS currently offers raised-height, accessible and commercial toilet options, including rimless models and different inlet and S/P-trap configurations.
Do not assume that every raised-height toilet is suitable for an accessible project. If compliance is required, select the toilet according to the project specification and confirm the complete installation arrangement before purchasing.
Care basins are commonly wall hung to keep the floor area open and provide easier approach to the basin. Before ordering, check the basin width, projection, tap-hole configuration, overflow, waste and required mounting height. Some models also provide shelf space or left- and right-hand configurations. MBS currently offers dedicated care basins for accessible and commercial projects.
For tapware, extended lever handles can make operation easier for users with restricted hand movement. Selected commercial and care tapware includes basin and shower mixers designed with this type of everyday usability in mind.
Grab rails come in different lengths, shapes and left- or right-hand configurations, including straight, angled, 90-degree and T-bar designs. The correct rail depends on where support is needed and the complete bathroom layout. MBS currently carries straight rails, corner rails, toilet-assist rails and shower support rails in several sizes and finishes.
Do not select a grab rail by length or colour alone. The mounting position, wall structure and required fixing must also be suitable. Tradelink and Reece both offer accessible grab rails designed around specific toilet and support applications.
Many products used in commercial bathrooms — including toilets, urinals, taps and showers — are regulated under Australia’s WELS scheme. The water-rating label provides information such as litres per minute or litres per flush so you can compare water efficiency. Applicable regulated plumbing products also need valid WaterMark certification before they can be supplied or installed as part of a building or renovation project.
For commercial projects, check the individual product’s WELS registration, WaterMark information and specification rather than assuming that all products in the same category have identical ratings.
