How to Choose the Right Sink for Your Kitchen or Laundry

Choosing the right sink is about more than matching the colour of your kitchen or laundry. The available cabinet space, benchtop material, bowl size, installation method and plumbing position can all affect which sink will work best for your project.

However, a double bowl sink normally requires more cabinet space. Always compare the overall sink width with the internal dimensions of your cabinet rather than selecting a sink based on bowl size alone.

Topmount vs Undermount Sinks

The installation style can make a noticeable difference to both the appearance and practicality of your benchtop.

Topmount sinks, sometimes called drop-in sinks, sit over the benchtop with a visible rim. They are widely used in kitchens and laundries and can be suitable for new builds, rental properties and straightforward renovation projects. Depending on the benchtop and existing cut-out, they may also be easier to consider when replacing an older sink.

Undermount sinks are installed below the benchtop, creating a cleaner and more streamlined appearance. Because there is no raised rim sitting above the bench, crumbs and water can be wiped directly from the benchtop into the sink. They are commonly paired with stone, porcelain and other suitable solid benchtop materials.

Not every sink or benchtop is suitable for every installation method. Confirm the installation requirements with your benchtop supplier or installer before the benchtop is cut.

Do You Need a Sink with a Drainer?

A built-in drainer can be useful if you regularly hand-wash dishes, cookware or food preparation items.

The drainer provides a dedicated area for drying and helps direct excess water back towards the sink rather than leaving it across the benchtop. This can be particularly practical in family kitchens, laundries and rental properties where everyday functionality is a priority.

If your kitchen already includes a dishwasher and you prefer a more minimal benchtop, a sink without a drainer may provide a cleaner appearance and leave more usable preparation space.

For sinks with an offset bowl or drainer, also check whether the model is left-hand, right-hand or reversible before ordering. The correct orientation will depend on your cabinet layout, dishwasher location, surrounding appliances and available benchtop space.

Choosing the Right Sink Size and Bowl Depth

Start by checking the cabinet width, not just the available benchtop space.

The sink bowl, mounting clips and plumbing all need to fit inside the cabinet. A sink that appears to fit across the benchtop may still be too large for the cabinet underneath.

You should also consider:

• the overall width and depth of the sink;
• minimum cabinet size recommended for the product;
• internal bowl dimensions;
• bowl depth;
• waste and plumbing position;
• tap or mixer location;
• dishwasher position;
• benchtop depth; and
• required cut-out dimensions.

A deeper bowl gives you more space for washing larger items and can help contain splashing, but it also extends further into the cabinet underneath. This may affect waste pipes, storage space or pull-out bins.

For a new kitchen, it is best to choose your sink before the cabinetry and stone benchtop are finalised.

Stainless Steel, Granite or Fireclay?

Stainless steel sinks remain one of the most versatile choices for kitchens and laundries. They suit a wide range of cabinetry and tapware styles, are easy to coordinate with other appliances and are available in many different bowl configurations.

Selected sinks are also available in finishes such as black, gunmetal and gold or brass tones. These can help coordinate the sink with matching or complementary sink mixers, cabinet handles and other kitchen finishes.

Granite sinks are worth considering when you prefer a softer, solid-colour appearance rather than traditional stainless steel. Colours such as black, grey or white can work particularly well with stone benchtops and contemporary cabinetry.

For traditional, farmhouse or Hampton-style kitchens, a fireclay butler sink creates a very different look. Butler sinks are often deeper and more visually prominent, so the cabinetry generally needs to be designed around the sink rather than treating it as a simple replacement fixture.

Always follow the individual product care instructions, as cleaning and maintenance requirements vary between materials and finishes.

Choosing a Sink for a Kitchen vs Laundry

Kitchen and laundry sinks may look similar, but the way they are used can be quite different.

For a main kitchen, think about cookware size, food preparation, dishwasher use and how much bench space you want to preserve. Larger single bowls and double bowl configurations are popular where the sink is used frequently.

In a butler’s pantry, a smaller single bowl may be enough for food preparation and secondary cleaning, while larger designs can turn the pantry into a full working zone.

For a laundry, bowl depth and durability are often more important than having multiple bowls. A generous laundry sink can make it easier to soak clothing, fill buckets, rinse cleaning equipment or handle other household tasks.

In compact laundries or apartments, a smaller sink can help preserve valuable cabinet and benchtop space.

Match Your Sink with the Right Mixer

The sink and mixer should be selected together rather than as completely separate products.

A deep or wide bowl may work better with a taller sink mixer or pullout mixer that provides greater reach. If you are considering filtered drinking water, boiling or chilled water systems, check whether additional tap holes or under-bench space will be required.

Also confirm whether your chosen sink includes a tap landing or tap hole. Many undermount sinks are designed for the mixer to be installed directly through the benchtop instead.
