Start with the practical requirements rather than appearance alone. Consider:
For a renovation or new kitchen, it is important to select the sink before the final benchtop cut-out is made.
The sink cabinet is one of the most important limitations when choosing a kitchen sink.
Do not simply compare the outside width of the sink with the nominal cabinet width. Check the manufacturer's specified minimum cabinet size, as the bowl, mounting clips, plumbing and cabinet sides all need sufficient clearance.
Also check:
A topmount or inset sink is installed from above the benchtop, leaving a visible rim around the sink. It is practical, relatively
straightforward to install and compatible with a wide range of benchtop materials.
An undermount sink is fixed underneath the benchtop, creating a clean appearance with no sink rim sitting on top of the bench. It also makes it easy to wipe crumbs and water directly from the benchtop into the sink.
A flushmount sink is installed so the sink edge sits approximately level with the benchtop surface.
Undermount sinks are generally best suited to suitable water-resistant solid surfaces such as stone, porcelain or engineered surfaces.
A single bowl sink provides one large uninterrupted washing area and can be very practical for large pots, roasting trays and cookware. It is also a popular option where most dishes are washed in a dishwasher.
A double bowl sink allows you to perform two tasks at the same time, such as washing in one bowl and rinsing or draining in the other.
A 1.5 bowl sink provides a main bowl together with a smaller secondary bowl, offering some separation without taking up as much space as two full-size bowls.
The best choice depends on your kitchen size and daily routine rather than simply choosing the configuration with the most bowls.
A deeper bowl can make it easier to wash large pots, baking trays and cookware and can help contain water splash.
However, deeper is not automatically better.
A very deep sink may reduce usable storage beneath the sink and can interfere with drawers, waste pipes or other plumbing. It may also be less comfortable for some users who need to reach further down into the bowl.
Check both the bowl depth and cabinet configuration before purchasing rather than looking only at the sink's width and length.
There is no single best material for every kitchen.
Stainless steel is durable, practical and relatively easy to maintain. It works with most kitchen styles and is available across a wide range of prices, bowl configurations and installation methods.
Granite composite sinks are popular where customers want a coloured or matte appearance, particularly black, grey or white.
Fireclay or ceramic sinks are often selected for farmhouse, Hamptons and traditional kitchens. They provide a distinctive appearance but normally require more consideration around cabinetry and installation.
Choose according to your design, maintenance expectations, budget and how heavily the sink will be used.
Steel thickness is one factor that can affect the feel, rigidity and sound characteristics of a stainless steel sink, but it should not be considered in isolation.
Many quality kitchen sinks use stainless steel around 1.0–1.5mm thick, depending on their design and manufacturing method.
Also consider:
A well-designed sink made from slightly thinner steel can still perform very well.
The radius describes how rounded the internal corners of the sink bowl are.
A small or tight radius, such as an R10-style square bowl, creates a more architectural and contemporary appearance.
A larger, more rounded radius usually makes the internal corners easier to wipe and clean.
Very square-looking sinks can therefore provide a strong modern aesthetic, while softer corners can be more forgiving for everyday cleaning.
When comparing sinks, consider the balance between appearance and ease of maintenance, rather than assuming that the smallest radius is automatically better.
Not necessarily.
A sink with an integrated drainer provides a dedicated area for drying dishes, draining washed food and placing wet items. It can be especially useful if you frequently hand-wash dishes.
A sink without a drainer provides a cleaner, more minimalist appearance and preserves more usable benchtop space. This can work particularly well in kitchens where most dishes go into the dishwasher.
Accessories such as removable draining trays, roll-up mats and sink racks can also provide temporary draining space without
permanently taking up part of the benchtop.
It depends on where your kitchen mixer will be installed.
A sink with a tap hole allows the mixer to be mounted directly through the sink.
A sink without a tap hole is commonly used where the kitchen mixer will be installed through the benchtop behind or beside the sink.
Before choosing, check:
Some sinks have pre-drilled tap holes, some have optional or knock-out positions, and others are supplied without tap holes. Always check the individual product specification before ordering.
Sometimes, but the new sink must be compatible with the existing benchtop cut-out.
This is particularly important for topmount replacement sinks. The new sink needs to:
For undermount sinks, replacing the sink without altering the benchtop can be more complicated because the exposed stone cut-out forms part of the finished appearance.
Before ordering a replacement sink, measure the existing cut-out as well as the overall sink dimensions and compare them with the manufacturer's installation template.
Stainless steel can develop fine surface marks and scratches through normal everyday use.
This does not necessarily mean there is a defect with the sink. Over time, regular use can create a more uniform surface appearance.
To help maintain the finish:
Follow the manufacturer's care instructions
Quality granite composite sinks are designed for everyday kitchen use, but they still require regular cleaning.
On darker sinks, mineral deposits and limescale may sometimes appear as lighter marks, while lighter sinks can show darker food or surface residue more easily.
For best results:
Follow the manufacturer's recommended cleaning method
Useful accessories can turn the sink into a larger food-preparation and cleaning workstation.
Depending on the sink model, available accessories may include:
Accessories designed specifically for the sink are often more convenient because they fit directly onto the bowl or sink ledge.
We specifically positions sink accessories as a way to turn the sink into an organised workstation.
