Semi-Frameless Shower Screens

A semi-frameless shower screen uses less visible framing than a full framed enclosure while still retaining wall channels or structural supports where needed. This creates a cleaner appearance while allowing useful adjustment on many models. A full framed shower screen has more perimeter framing and can be practical where greater adjustment is useful. A frameless shower screen uses minimal hardware for the most open appearance but generally depends more on accurate measurements and suitable fixing conditions. Choose according to wall condition, layout, appearance and budget rather than style alone.

Measure the finished tiled opening after tiling is completed wherever possible. For a wall-to-wall screen, measure near the bottom, middle and top because finished walls may not be perfectly parallel. For a corner enclosure, measure the front and return sides separately. Compare your measurements with the individual screen’s adjustment range rather than selecting only by nominal size. Also check the finished height and actual doorway opening. If your measurements fall outside standard ranges, consider custom-size shower screens or compare other options in the main shower screen collection.

Choose according to the space outside the shower and the entry opening you need. A sliding shower screen keeps the door within the enclosure footprint, making it practical where a vanity, toilet or doorway limits swing clearance. A hinged or pivot door can provide a more direct entry but needs enough room to open comfortably. MBS offers semi-frameless options in both configurations. Both 8mm and 10mm toughened glass can be suitable when used as part of a correctly designed shower-screen system. The current MBS semi-frameless range includes both thicknesses, depending on the screen design. Glass thickness should not be considered on its own — framing, wall channels, hinges, rollers and panel size all contribute to the complete enclosure. A 10mm screen may provide a heavier, more substantial appearance, while an 8mm design can still perform well when properly supported. Compare the complete semi-frameless shower screen range rather than assuming thicker glass automatically means a better choice.

Minor wall variation is common in renovated bathrooms. Many semi-frameless screens use adjustable wall channels that can accommodate a limited amount of out-of-plumb variation, but each model has its own adjustment range. Measure the opening at several heights and compare the smallest and largest measurements with the product specification before ordering. If the variation is significant, a standard screen should not be forced to fit. In that situation, compare custom-size shower screens or a more adjustable full framed shower screen.

The correct layout depends on how many sides of the shower are exposed. A wall-to-wall shower screen suits a shower positioned between two opposing walls. A front and full return shower screen is designed for a corner shower with one exposed side. For a more open bathroom, a walk-in shower screen uses a fixed panel without a conventional door. Decide on the shower layout first, then compare door type, glass height, width and finish.

Before ordering, confirm the finished opening dimensions, screen height, adjustment range, door type, actual entry width, glass thickness, hardware finish and installation surface. For corner layouts, check both front and return dimensions and make sure any hinged door has enough clearance from nearby fixtures.
