The most important things to confirm are:

If you are replacing an existing toilet without changing the plumbing, the trap type, set-out and water inlet position are
particularly important.

A Close Coupled Toilets has the cistern mounted directly onto the toilet pan, forming one connected toilet suite.

A back-to-wall or wall-faced toilet has the back of the pan sitting flush against the wall. Many modern back-to-wall toilets are also close-coupled, with the cistern visible above the pan. This design hides most pipework and makes the floor around the toilet easier to clean.

An in-wall toilet uses a concealed cistern installed inside the wall or a suitable cavity. The toilet pan remains floor-mounted, while only the flush plate is normally visible above it.

A wall-hung toilet also uses a concealed cistern, but the pan itself is mounted above the floor on a suitable support frame. This creates visible floor space underneath and gives the bathroom a more minimalist appearance.

The right choice depends on your plumbing, available wall cavity, bathroom layout, budget and whether you are completing a full renovation or simply replacing an existing toilet.

These terms describe where the toilet waste exits.

An S-trap toilet connects to a waste pipe through the floor.

A P-trap toilet connects horizontally through the wall.

A skew toilet has the waste outlet positioned to the left or right side and is more commonly found in some older Australian homes.

Many modern toilet suites are described as universal S/P trap, meaning they can accommodate more than one installation configuration within specified set-out ranges. However, this does not mean every toilet will fit every existing pipe position.

Always check the individual toilet's trap options and set-out specifications before ordering.

The set-out tells you where the waste pipe is positioned in relation to the finished wall or floor.

For an S-trap toilet, measure horizontally from the finished wall to the centre of the waste outlet in the floor.

For a P-trap toilet, the relevant measurement is generally from the finished floor to the centre of the waste outlet through the wall.

For example, a toilet may specify an S-trap set-out range such as 90–160mm. Your existing plumbing needs to fall within the toilet manufacturer's specified installation range, unless plumbing alterations are made.

Do not measure from the skirting board. Measurements should reference the finished wall surface.

If you are unsure, ask your plumber to confirm the trap type and set-out before purchasing the toilet.

Often yes, but only if the new toilet is compatible with the existing trap type, set-out and water inlet position.

For a straightforward replacement, we recommend checking:

1. Whether the existing toilet is S-trap, P-trap or skew
2. The waste set-out measurement
3. Whether the water supply is bottom, rear or another inlet configuration
4. The available space behind and beside the toilet
5. The overall projection of the new toilet

If these do not match, your plumber may need to relocate the water supply or modify the waste connection.

This is why choosing a toilet purely by its overall dimensions or appearance can result in installation problems, even if the new toilet appears similar to the old one.

The water inlet is where the water supply enters the toilet cistern.

With a bottom inlet, the water connection and flexible hose are usually connected near the lower side of the cistern or toilet and may remain visible beside the pan.

With a back or concealed inlet, the water supply connection is positioned behind or inside the toilet system, creating a cleaner
appearance with less visible pipework.

Some toilets offer multiple inlet options, while others are designed specifically for one configuration.

If you are replacing an older toilet that currently has a visible bottom inlet with a toilet designed for a concealed rear inlet,
plumbing alterations may be required. Therefore, always check the product specifications and discuss your existing water point with your plumber before purchasing.

A rimless toilet does not have the traditional enclosed rim around the inside of the toilet bowl. Removing this rim reduces hard-to-reach areas and generally makes the toilet easier to clean.

Tornado, vortex and similar flushing technologies describe the way water is directed around the bowl during flushing. Depending on the toilet design, water may circulate around the bowl to provide wider and more effective coverage.

These terms are related but they are not exactly the same thing:

• Rimless describes the bowl design
• Tornado or vortex describes the flushing action

A toilet can therefore be rimless without necessarily using a tornado flush, while many newer toilets combine both technologies.

For everyday use, we recommend focusing on the complete toilet design, flushing performance, ease of cleaning and WELS rating rather than choosing a toilet based on one marketing term alone.

For smaller bathrooms, ensuites and powder rooms, the projection of the toilet — how far it extends from the wall — is often more important than its width.

A short-projection or compact toilet or in-wall cistern toilet can help provide extra clearance between the toilet and nearby fixtures such as:

• Bathroom doors
• Vanities
• Shower screens
• Baths
• Opposite walls

Back-to-wall and some wall-hung toilets can also create a more streamlined appearance in compact spaces.

A raised-height or overheight toilet has a higher seating position than a standard toilet and may make sitting down and standing up more comfortable for some users.

A smart toilet can combine a conventional toilet with additional hygiene and comfort functions such as:

Smart toilets can reduce the need for a separate bidet seat and provide additional personal hygiene features.

WELS stands for Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards.

The WELS label allows customers to compare how efficiently different toilets use water. The label or online product information shows the product's water-efficiency star rating and, for dual-flush toilets, the amount of water used for full and half flushes.

In general, the more WELS stars a product has, the more water efficient it is. Toilets regulated under the Australian WELS scheme must also be registered and display the required water-rating information when sold.

When comparing toilets, check both the WELS rating and the actual flush volumes rather than assuming that flushing power is determined by water volume alone.
