Start with your finished shower dimensions, bathroom layout, available door clearance and shower configuration.
First determine whether your bathroom requires:
Then consider whether you prefer a frameless, semi-frameless or fully framed design, followed by the door type, glass thickness, screen height and hardware finish.
The position of your shower head, toilet, vanity and bathroom door should also be considered, as these can affect which shower screen and door configuration will work best.
For renovations, we generally recommend confirming the shower screen size based on the finished tiled dimensions, rather than relying only on measurements taken before tiling.
A frameless shower screen uses minimal metal framing and usually thicker toughened glass secured with brackets, hinges, channels or other specialised hardware. It provides a clean and contemporary appearance.
A semi-frameless shower screen uses aluminium framing around selected sections while leaving other glass edges relatively exposed. It provides a good balance between a streamlined appearance, adjustability and price.
A fully framed shower screen has aluminium framing around most or all of the glass panels. It generally provides greater adjustment for uneven openings and can offer very good water containment, making it a practical option for family bathrooms and renovation projects.
There is no single option that is best for every bathroom. The right choice depends on your budget, bathroom layout, wall condition, installation requirements and preferred appearance.
For the most accurate result, measure the shower opening after the wall and floor tiles have been completed.
For a wall-to-wall shower screen, measure the opening at several different heights — typically near the bottom, middle and top. Do not assume the two walls are perfectly parallel.
For a corner shower screen, measure both the front opening and return side. It is also important to check whether the walls and floor are reasonably square and level.
Measuring the height of your existing shower screen, or the finished height of your wall tiles if you are planning a replacement, is important because the existing height can sometimes limit the available shower screen options.
Record all measurements in millimetres and compare them with the adjustment range shown in the individual shower screen specifications. Do not order a shower screen purely based on a nominal size such as “900mm” or “1200mm”.
If you are unsure about the measurements, contact our team with photos and measurements before ordering.
In most cases, the final shower screen measurement should be taken after waterproofing and tiling have been completed.
Tiles, adhesive, screeding and wall preparation can change
the finished opening by several millimetres. This is particularly important for frameless and custom-made shower screens, where accurate measurements are required.
You can choose the general shower screen style and approximate size during the planning stage, but we recommend confirming the finished tiled opening before placing the final order, particularly for custom products.
The shower screen itself is normally one of the later items installed during a bathroom renovation.
The best option mainly depends on the size and layout of your bathroom.
A sliding shower screen does not require the door to swing into the bathroom, making it particularly useful in compact bathrooms or where a vanity, toilet or other fixture is located close to the shower.
A hinged or pivot shower door can provide a generous and open entrance, but sufficient clearance is required for the door to operate safely.
A walk-in shower screen removes the door completely and creates a minimalist appearance. However, sufficient shower depth and an appropriate shower-head position are important for controlling water splash.
Before choosing a door type, consider not only the size of the shower opening but also what is located immediately outside and around the shower area.
The correct glass thickness depends on the shower screen design and fixing system. Thicker glass is not automatically better for every type of shower screen.
6mm toughened glass is commonly used in fully framed and some semi-frameless shower screens because the surrounding frame provides additional structural support.
8mm toughened glass is commonly used in some semi-frameless and frameless systems.
10mm toughened glass is commonly used for fully frameless fixed panels and hinged shower screens because frameless systems rely more heavily on the glass itself together with suitable brackets and hinges.
The most important consideration is that the glass thickness is appropriate for the specific shower screen system and complies with the manufacturer's specifications.
Yes, when an appropriate shower screen product is correctly selected and installed.
Shower screens use toughened safety glass, which is specifically designed for applications where human impact may occur.
The glass thickness, panel size, fixing method and hardware all form part of the overall shower screen system and should comply with applicable Australian safety requirements and the manufacturer's specifications.
For this reason, ordinary window glass should never be substituted for the safety glass designed for a shower screen.
This is quite common, particularly in renovations and older bathrooms.
Many fully framed and semi-frameless shower screens have an adjustment range within their wall channels, allowing the installer to compensate for a limited amount of variation.
Frameless shower screens generally require more accurate measurements because there is less framing available to conceal or compensate for walls that are out of plumb.
If the wall or floor is significantly out of level, square or plumb, a standard shower screen may not be suitable and a custom-made solution or additional building work may be required.
This is why we recommend measuring the opening at several points rather than taking only one measurement.
Yes. Shower screens can be installed in many different bathroom configurations, including:
However, not every shower screen is suitable for every installation type.
For example, when installing onto a shower base, the width and position of the flat mounting surface and the shower-base lip must be considered carefully.
Frameless brackets, wall channels and door hardware also require suitable fixing locations and adequate structural support.
If your shower has a sunken floor, recessed shower area, unusual hob, raised shower-base lip or other non-standard detail, we recommend sending us photos and measurements before purchasing so we can help check compatibility.
No shower screen should automatically be assumed to be completely watertight.
A shower screen is designed to contain and manage normal shower splash, but frameless shower screens (which may allow more splash compared to framed or semi-frameless systems) require small functional gaps around glass edges, doors and hinges because they do not have a complete frame and sealing system around every edge.
Water containment also depends on factors such as:
A walk-in shower also has an intentionally open entrance, so some splash outside the shower area may occur if the layout is not planned correctly.
If maximum water containment is your main priority, a fully framed or well-enclosed semi-frameless shower screen may sometimes be more suitable than a minimalist frameless or walk-in design.
There is no single panel width that can guarantee that no water will splash outside the shower.
Water containment depends on several factors, including the:
In general, a longer fixed panel provides better splash protection, but it also reduces the available shower entry space. As a general guideline, we recommend allowing at least a 600mm entry width for a wall-to-wall layout, so you can then determine the remaining space available for the fixed glass panel.
In general, a longer fixed panel provides greater splash protection, but it also reduces the available shower entry.
The position of the shower head is particularly important. Directing the water spray away from the open entrance can significantly improve water containment.
In Melbourne, where the colder season lasts for a significant part of the year, a walk-in shower may not be the most suitable option for every bathroom—particularly in spaces without adequate heating. Without a shower door or enclosure, warm air can dissipate quickly once the hot water is turned off, making the area feel cold soon after use.
In addition, walk-in showers can lead to a persistently wet or slippery floor if the shower fall or slope is not sufficiently designed to drain water efficiently. Proper drainage and floor grading are essential to ensure residual water is cleared quickly and safely.
When planning a walk-in shower, consider the complete shower layout rather than choosing the glass panel based on appearance alone.
Yes. Custom shower screens can be a good solution where a standard adjustable shower screen does not suit the finished opening.
Custom shower screens may be required for:
Melbourne Bathroom Shop offers both standard-size and custom shower screen options, depending on the project.
For a custom shower screen, accurate finished measurements are particularly important, and professional measurement may be recommended before manufacturing.
Some framed and semi-frameless shower screens may be suitable for experienced tradespeople or capable DIY installers, depending on the manufacturer's instructions.
However, shower-screen glass is large and heavy, and correct measuring, drilling, fixing, levelling and sealing are important for both safety and long-term performance.
Fully frameless shower screens and heavy hinged glass doors generally require greater installation accuracy and suitable structural fixing.
Incorrect installation can damage the glass, tiles, waterproofing or hardware and may also affect product performance or warranty.
If you are not experienced in shower-screen installation, we recommend using a professional installer.
Melbourne Bathroom Shop also provides professional shower-screen installation services in eligible Melbourne areas.
For everyday maintenance, use a shower squeegee or soft cloth after showering to remove excess water from the glass. This can significantly reduce soap residue, mineral deposits and water spotting.
Clean the glass and hardware regularly using a mild, non-abrasive cleaner suitable for the particular surface and finish.
Avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals or unsuitable cleaning products that may damage:
Tracks, hinges, seals and the lower edges of the shower screen should also be cleaned periodically because soap residue and moisture can accumulate in these areas.
If your shower screen has an easy-clean or protective glass coating, always follow the manufacturer's care instructions.
