Frequently asked questions

1. What should I check before buying a new toilet?

Before choosing a toilet based on appearance, first check whether it will work with your existing bathroom and plumbing.

The most important things to confirm are:

  • Whether you have an S-trap, P-trap or skew trap
  • Your existing toilet set-out
  • The position of the water inlet
  • Available toilet width and projection
  • Whether you are replacing an existing toilet or doing a full renovation
  • Whether you want a back-to-wall, close-coupled, in-wall or wall-hung toilet
  • Preferred seat height
  • Rimless or tornado-flush design
  • WELS water-efficiency rating

If you are replacing an existing toilet without changing the plumbing, the trap type, set-out and water inlet position are
particularly important.

2. What is the difference between back-to-wall, close-coupled, wall-hung and in-wall toilets?

A Close Coupled Toilets has the cistern mounted directly onto the toilet pan, forming one connected toilet suite.

A back-to-wall or wall-faced toilet has the back of the pan sitting flush against the wall. Many modern back-to-wall toilets are also close-coupled, with the cistern visible above the pan. This design hides most pipework and makes the floor around the toilet easier to clean.

An in-wall toilet uses a concealed cistern installed inside the wall or a suitable cavity. The toilet pan remains floor-mounted, while only the flush plate is normally visible above it.

A wall-hung toilet also uses a concealed cistern, but the pan itself is mounted above the floor on a suitable support frame. This creates visible floor space underneath and gives the bathroom a more minimalist appearance.

The right choice depends on your plumbing, available wall cavity, bathroom layout, budget and whether you are completing a full renovation or simply replacing an existing toilet.

3. What is the difference between an S-trap, P-trap and skew toilet?

These terms describe where the toilet waste exits.

An S-trap toilet connects to a waste pipe through the floor.

A P-trap toilet connects horizontally through the wall.

A skew toilet has the waste outlet positioned to the left or right side and is more commonly found in some older Australian homes.

Many modern toilet suites are described as universal S/P trap, meaning they can accommodate more than one installation configuration within specified set-out ranges. However, this does not mean every toilet will fit every existing pipe position.

Always check the individual toilet's trap options and set-out specifications before ordering.

4.What is a toilet set-out and how do I measure it?

The set-out tells you where the waste pipe is positioned in relation to the finished wall or floor.

For an S-trap toilet, measure horizontally from the finished wall to the centre of the waste outlet in the floor.

For a P-trap toilet, the relevant measurement is generally from the finished floor to the centre of the waste outlet through the wall.

For example, a toilet may specify an S-trap set-out range such as 90–160mm. Your existing plumbing needs to fall within the toilet manufacturer's specified installation range, unless plumbing alterations are made.

Do not measure from the skirting board. Measurements should reference the finished wall surface.

If you are unsure, ask your plumber to confirm the trap type and set-out before purchasing the toilet.

5.Can I replace my old toilet without moving the existing plumbing?

Often yes, but only if the new toilet is compatible with the existing trap type, set-out and water inlet position.

For a straightforward replacement, we recommend checking:

  1. Whether the existing toilet is S-trap, P-trap or skew
  2. The waste set-out measurement
  3. Whether the water supply is bottom, rear or another inlet configuration
  4. The available space behind and beside the toilet
  5. The overall projection of the new toilet

If these do not match, your plumber may need to relocate the water supply or modify the waste connection.

This is why choosing a toilet purely by its overall dimensions or appearance can result in installation problems, even if the new toilet appears similar to the old one.

6.What is the difference between a bottom inlet, top inlet and back inlet toilet?

The water inlet is where the water supply enters the toilet cistern.

With a bottom inlet, the water connection and flexible hose are usually connected near the lower side of the cistern or toilet and may remain visible beside the pan.

With a back or concealed inlet, the water supply connection is positioned behind or inside the toilet system, creating a cleaner
appearance with less visible pipework.

Some toilets offer multiple inlet options, while others are designed specifically for one configuration.

If you are replacing an older toilet that currently has a visible bottom inlet with a toilet designed for a concealed rear inlet,
plumbing alterations may be required. Therefore, always check the product specifications and discuss your existing water point with your plumber before purchasing.

7. What is a rimless toilet, and is tornado or vortex flush better?

A rimless toilet does not have the traditional enclosed rim around the inside of the toilet bowl. Removing this rim reduces hard-to-reach areas and generally makes the toilet easier to clean.

Tornado, vortex and similar flushing technologies describe the way water is directed around the bowl during flushing. Depending on the toilet design, water may circulate around the bowl to provide wider and more effective coverage.

These terms are related but they are not exactly the same thing:

A toilet can therefore be rimless without necessarily using a tornado flush, while many newer toilets combine both technologies.

For everyday use, we recommend focusing on the complete toilet design, flushing performance, ease of cleaning and WELS rating rather than choosing a toilet based on one marketing term alone.

8. What size toilet is best for a small bathroom or powder room?

For smaller bathrooms, ensuites and powder rooms, the projection of the toilet — how far it extends from the wall — is often more important than its width.

A short-projection or compact toilet or in-wall cistern toilet can help provide extra clearance between the toilet and nearby fixtures such as:

Back-to-wall and some wall-hung toilets can also create a more streamlined appearance in compact spaces.

However, always check the full product dimensions as well as the required set-out. A physically shorter toilet is only suitable if it is also compatible with your plumbing. We offer short-projection or compact toilet products specifically intended for tighter bathroom layouts.

9. Should I choose a standard-height or raised-height toilet?

A raised-height or overheight toilet has a higher seating position than a standard toilet and may make sitting down and standing up more comfortable for some users.

It can be worth considering for:

  • Taller users
  • Older family members
  • People who prefer a higher seating position
  • Some mobility-related bathroom designs

However, a raised-height toilet is not automatically an accessible or ambulant-compliant toilet.

Projects with specific accessibility requirements should use products specifically designed and specified for that application, and the complete bathroom layout and installation must also meet the relevant project requirements.

Melbourne Bathroom Shop carries both raised-height and dedicated care toilet options, so the intended application should be confirmed before purchasing.

10.What should I know before choosing an in-wall cistern or wall-hung toilet?

In-wall toilet systems create a clean appearance by concealing the cistern inside the wall or a purpose-built cavity.

They are particularly suitable when you are undertaking a full bathroom renovation, because the cistern and, for wall-hung toilets, the supporting frame need to be installed before the wall is finished.

Important things to consider include:

  • Available wall or cavity depth
  • Cistern and pan compatibility
  • Wall-hung support frame requirements
  • Waste position
  • Water supply position
  • Flush plate compatibility
  • Future servicing access

Most concealed systems are designed so the cistern can be serviced through the flush plate opening, rather than requiring the wall to be demolished for normal maintenance.

However, flush plates and cistern components are often system-specific. Do not assume that any flush button will work with any concealed cistern. Confirm the cistern, toilet pan and flush plate combination before ordering.

11.Is a smart toilet worth considering?

A smart toilet can combine a conventional toilet with additional hygiene and comfort functions such as:

  • Integrated bidet washing
  • Adjustable water pressure
  • Adjustable water temperature
  • Heated seat
  • Warm-air drying
  • Remote control
  • Automatic flushing
  • Automatic lid functions on selected models

Smart toilets can reduce the need for a separate bidet seat and provide additional personal hygiene features.

However, they require more planning than a conventional toilet. Depending on the model, you may need a suitable water supply, electrical power point, water pressure and plumbing configuration.

If you are considering a smart toilet during a renovation, we recommend selecting the model early enough for your plumber and electrician to prepare the correct services before the walls and tiles are completed. Melbourne Bathroom Shop offers dedicated smart toilet options with integrated bidet functions.

12. What does the WELS rating on a toilet mean?

WELS stands for Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards.

The WELS label allows customers to compare how efficiently different toilets use water. The label or online product information shows the product's water-efficiency star rating and, for dual-flush toilets, the amount of water used for full and half flushes.

In general, the more WELS stars a product has, the more water efficient it is. Toilets regulated under the Australian WELS scheme must also be registered and display the required water-rating information when sold.

When comparing toilets, check both the WELS rating and the actual flush volumes rather than assuming that flushing power is determined by water volume alone.

13. Do I need a plumber to install or replace a toilet in Victoria?

Yes. Toilet installation involves sanitary plumbing and must be carried out by an appropriately licensed or registered plumbing practitioner in Victoria.

The Victorian Building and Plumbing Commission identifies the installation and connection of sanitary fixtures as sanitary plumbing work and advises homeowners to engage appropriately licensed or registered plumbers for plumbing work.

Using a plumber is also particularly important when the new toilet requires changes to:

  • Waste position
  • Water inlet
  • Concealed cistern
  • Wall-hung frame
  • Existing drainage

Before buying a replacement toilet, it can be worthwhile asking your plumber to confirm the trap type, set-out and water
inlet so you know which models will fit.

14. How do I clean and maintain a toilet?

For regular cleaning, use a soft cloth or non-abrasive cleaning tool together with a mild cleaner suitable for vitreous china and the toilet-seat material.

For rimless toilets, the absence of the traditional enclosed rim generally makes it easier to see and clean the internal bowl surface. Quick-release toilet seats can also make cleaning around the seat and hinge area easier.

Avoid using abrasive pads or harsh chemicals unless the toilet manufacturer specifically confirms that they are suitable, as these may damage ceramic finishes, seats, hinges or coloured components.

If the toilet has specialised coatings, coloured ceramic, smart components or a bidet seat, always follow the manufacturer's individual cleaning instructions.

15. Where can I view and compare toilets in Melbourne before buying?

You can visit the Melbourne Bathroom Shop showroom in Blackburn, Victoria to compare different toilet styles including
back-to-wall, rimless, tornado-flush, compact, raised-height, in-wall and smart toilet options. MBS currently carries dedicated collections across these toilet categories.

Our showroom is located at:

214–218 Whitehorse Road, Blackburn VIC 3130, next to
Supercheap Auto Blackburn.

If you are replacing an existing toilet, we recommend
bringing or sending:

  • Photos of the existing toilet
  • A photo showing where the waste connects
  • The S-trap set-out measurement if applicable
  • Water inlet position
  • Existing toilet dimensions
  • Any information supplied by your plumber

This allows our team to narrow down compatible options before you purchase and helps reduce the risk of choosing a toilet that cannot be fitted to the existing plumbing.
