Start with how the basin needs to work with the rest of your bathroom, particularly your vanity, benchtop, tapware and available space.
Consider:
For a family bathroom, storage and practical bowl size may be the priority. In a small ensuite or powder room, a compact wall-hung or semi-recessed basin may make better use of limited space.
An above-counter basin, also called a vessel basin, sits predominantly on top of the vanity or benchtop and creates a strong design feature.
An inset basin is installed into the benchtop, with part of the basin or rim visible above the surface.
An undermount basin is installed underneath the benchtop, creating a clean and streamlined surface above.
A semi-recessed basin is partially installed into the vanity but projects forward beyond the cabinet or benchtop. This can be useful where the vanity depth is limited.
A wall-hung basin is fixed directly to the wall without requiring a vanity cabinet underneath.
For a small bathroom, look beyond basin width alone. The projection — how far the basin extends from the wall — can be just as important.
Good options can include:
A wall-hung basin keeps the floor visible and removes the need for a full vanity cabinet, while a semi-recessed basin can provide a generous bowl without requiring an excessively deep vanity.
We recommend wall-mounted basins for freeing up space, and we also offer compact wall basins designed for small bathrooms and powder rooms.
An above-counter basin sits on the vanity top and creates a more visible design feature. It also gives you flexibility to combine different basin shapes, colours and vanity-top materials.
However, the basin adds height above the benchtop, so the final vanity height and tapware selection need to be considered carefully.
An undermount basin sits below the benchtop, creating a cleaner and more streamlined appearance. It also makes it easy to wipe water directly from the benchtop into the basin.
The right choice depends on whether you prefer a statement basin or a more integrated vanity appearance, as well as your benchtop material, available space and cleaning preferences.
Check both the basin dimensions and the usable area of
the vanity top.
Allow enough space for:
Also consider how much space the basin takes up inside the vanity cabinet, particularly with inset and undermount basins where the bowl projects below the benchtop.
For above-counter basins, the bowl mainly sits above the vanity, which can help preserve some cabinet space underneath, although the waste and plumbing will still occupy part of the cabinet.
Always check the basin specification and cut-out requirements before the benchtop is manufactured or cut.
An above-counter basin often requires either:
The correct mixer height depends on the height and shape of the basin.
The outlet should sit high enough above the basin rim for comfortable hand washing, while the spout should project sufficiently into the bowl so that the water lands in an appropriate area rather than against the back edge.
A mixer that is too short may not clear the basin, while a mixer that is excessively high or poorly positioned can increase splash.
For this reason, we recommend selecting the basin and tapware together, rather than treating them as completely separate decisions.
The tap-hole configuration determines what type of tapware
can be mounted directly onto the basin.
A 0 tap-hole basin has no pre-drilled tap hole and is generally used with:
A 1 tap-hole basin is normally designed for a single basin mixer.
A 3 tap-hole basin is typically designed for a traditional three-piece tap set with separate hot and cold controls and a
central outlet.
A basin overflow is a secondary opening positioned near the upper part of the basin.
If the basin is being filled and the water level reaches the overflow opening, some water can flow through the overflow passage towards the waste.
Some basins include an overflow and others are intentionally designed without one.
Whether you prefer an overflow can depend on the basin design and how you use it, but the most important point when purchasing is that the basin waste must be compatible with the basin.
Many bathroom basins in Australia use a 32mm basin waste, but you should always check the individual product specification.
If the basin has an overflow, use a waste designed to accommodate an overflow.
If the basin does not have an overflow, use the appropriate non-overflow waste unless the product specifies a universal waste suitable for both configurations.
Individual basin specifications also state whether an overflow or non-overflow waste is required.
Do not select a pop-up waste based only on its colour.
It depends on the product.
Some basins include a waste, while many others require the waste to be purchased separately.
Before ordering, check:
Do not assume that a waste shown in a lifestyle image is automatically included with the basin.
No.
The basin needs to be compatible with the:
Inset, semi-inset and undermount basins require a specific benchtop cut-out.
Above-counter basins also require a waste hole and may require a separate tap hole through the benchtop.
A large undermount basin can interfere with drawers or internal cabinet structures, while a semi-recessed basin may require a vanity specifically designed to accommodate the basin projecting beyond the front of the cabinet.
Additional benchtop cutting requirement when some semi-inset basins are purchased with its vanity tops, demonstrating why basin and vanity compatibility should be confirmed before cutting.
There is no single best basin material for every bathroom.
Vitreous china or ceramic is one of the most common choices because it provides a smooth, easy-to-clean surface and is available in a very wide range of shapes and installation styles. All our ceramic basins as vitreous china featured with an enamel coating designed to create a dense and easy-to-clean surface.
Solid-surface basins generally provide a smooth matte, stone-like appearance and work particularly well in contemporary
bathrooms.
Concrete and stone basins can provide more natural colour, texture and variation, making each basin feel more individual. Natural-looking concrete products may have variations in patina, surface and colour.
Glass basins provide another decorative option and are particularly suited to feature or statement bathrooms.
Choose according to appearance, maintenance, weight, budget and how heavily the basin will be used.
Yes, particularly where space is limited or storage is not the main priority.
A wall-hung basin:
However, you lose the storage provided by a conventional vanity cabinet.
The wall also needs to provide suitable support for the basin and installation hardware.
The correct cleaning method depends on the basin material and finish.
For most ceramic basins, regular cleaning with a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge and a mild bathroom cleaner is sufficient.
Avoid abrasive pads and aggressive cleaners that may damage matte, coloured or specialised surfaces.
For concrete, natural-looking stone and solid-surface basins, follow the manufacturer's specific care instructions because these materials and protective treatments can differ from traditional glazed ceramic.
Water, toothpaste, cosmetics and soap residue should also be cleaned regularly rather than being allowed to build up.
Coloured and matte basins can make a strong design statement, but they may require different care from traditional gloss-white ceramic.
